Dozens of puppies were rescued from the hands of people who had them trapped and fattened to later sell their meat for human consumption, in the municipality of Nezahualcóyotl, State of Mexico.According to reports, on October 13, agents from the State Attorney General's Office (FGJEM), together with personnel from the State of Mexico's Environmental Protection Agency (PROPAEM) and the Nezahualcóyotl Municipal Government, carried out an operation at an address located in the Benito Juárez neighborhood. On the site they were able to rescue more than 90 dogs that suffered animal abuse by some people who were in charge of the place. The General Directorate of local Citizen Security assured that none of the animals will be sacrificed and they will remain in the Canine Attention Center of the municipality, at least until the corresponding investigations are completed.“The General Directorate of Citizen Security will continue to be a pro-animal institution, because we know that all lives are important,” the organization assured. It should be noted that the operation took place as part of an investigation initiated by the FGJEM, after it was reported in the media that they were supposedly fattening puppies in a building in Nezahualcóyotl, State of Mexico, to presumably distribute their meat in food marketing.“According to article 235 Bis of the Penal Code of the State of Mexico, animal abuse is a crime and is established when intentional injuries are caused, abandoned and exposed to risks that threaten their integrity. The penalty is from 6 months to 4 years in prison”, detailed the local Prosecutor’s Office through a statement. On the other hand, if the person causes non-immediate death and prolongs the agony of the animal, the penalty is three to six years in prison.Similarly, it will be increased by up to one half if the crime is committed by public servants who are commissioned to handle copies.According to the complaint made days before by the Animal Protection organization Nitin Mexico AC, the home that was searched this Thursday by the authorities had been operating as a clandestine dog slaughterhouse for several years and its meat was sold for human consumption. With photographs and videos they showed the precariousness in which the animals lived, detailing that there was also "fresh and dry blood on the floors and walls, even in the body of some dogs, there are bones and the smell of rotting bodies is incredible."Since October 11, they assured that they had already contacted the authorities to carry out coordinated work and to carry out an official intervention, which could be carried out this Thursday for the benefit of the puppies. It is worth mentioning that the State of Mexico is one of the entities of the Republic in which the crime of animal abuse is punished with a custodial sentence. The Office of the Attorney for the Protection of the Environment of the State of Mexico (PROPAEM) and the Federal Attorney for the Protection of the Environment (PROFEPA) deal with cases of commercialization of exotic species, illegal sports facilities, slaughter of animals, as well as exhibition and training for profit .Meanwhile, the Edomex Prosecutor's Office is in charge of matters related to damages, injuries, sexual assaults, non-immediate death or torture and poisoning.
