Photo: Jeimi Villamizar- Unimedios.Medal Order of the Congress of Colombia in the degree of commander for 80 years FOUN-2012.Photo: Jeimi Villamizar- Unimedios.When commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Faculty of Dentistry of the National University of Colombia (UNAL), its dean, Professor José Manuel González, highlights that it is recognized for its participation in important scientific events, between 2016 and 2022 it has received 46 awards in research, between 2017 and 2022 it has published around 240 articles –70% in another language, especially English– and has positioned 9 research groups recognized by Colciencias.For example, recently the student Sara Delgadillo, a member of the Basic and Applied Research Group in Dentistry, won first place in the undergraduate category (junior) of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Hatton Competition, held in China. .“The research determined that cytomegalovirus, present in the mouth, infects healthy gum cells causing the inflammation protein (cyclooxygenase) to increase and establishing the potential role of the virus in the appearance of inflammation and bleeding of the gums and other tissues that surround the tooth”, he explains.In addition, Professor González recalls that the Faculty has the most consolidated Ethics Committee and best practices of UNAL.For his part, the teacher Dairo Javier Marín Zuluaga, former dean and current National Director of University Welfare at UNAL, mentions that “it is the Faculty of Dentistry in the country with the most professors with doctorates.This has allowed us to further consolidate our research, in areas such as dental materials, basic and clinical research, and technological development.”For a year now, the Faculty has been implementing a pioneering pedagogical strategy in the world, called 'collaborative learning teams', with which it is sought that students of various levels of training (preclinical, clinical) work together to enhance their clinical skills”.In addition, with respect to training, the Faculty also stands out for having graduates as teachers in most of the Dentistry faculties in the country and from other universities in the world;To date, it has more than 5,000 graduated dentists and more than 1,000 postgraduates.In infrastructure, "as of 2023 it will have a new building on 53rd Street, to which it will transfer its clinical services, and where it is expected to further modernize the infrastructure and technology to respond to the current challenges of the program," he mentions.Regarding community service, "UN por Colombia" is a university extension group that for 22 years has reached the most remote territories of the country such as La Guajira, Amazonas, Meta, Caquetá and Cauca, providing oral health to the most vulnerable.For several years this initiative was led by Professor Clara Patricia Acuña, its creator.Professor Edson Jair Ospina, director of the group, points out that "in the last two years it has been strengthening its presence in two indigenous and peasant communities of Tolima, in order to generate processes of attention, teaching, extension and research in oral health for establish accompaniment and integration during this process”.“A few weeks ago, UN for Colombia made a trip to San Vicente del Caguán and La Macarena where they worked with the population in clinical care and in the exchange of ancestral knowledge and medicinal plants, as part of the construction of a comprehensive health plan.”The origin of the Dentistry program goes back to the Dental College of Bogotá, founded on January 2, 1888 by Guillermo Vargas Paredes, from Bumangués, considered the father of Colombian dentistry, who studied at the New York Dental College.Initially, the Faculty, like its counterparts around the world, focused on the development of practical skills, but later began to transform into a discipline that generates knowledge;Thus, as of 1982, postgraduate programs were developed and the first Master's Degree in Research in Dentistry was created, another important milestone in his academic career.In the 1970s, the Faculty began to strengthen its hospital activities and help the community, linking up with the Hospitals of Misericordia, Materno Infantil and San Juan de Dios.Today it is a training center for human talent in quality health, with a career in Dentistry, the Interfaculty Doctorate in Public Health, Specialties in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Rehabilitation, Orthodontics, Pediatric Stomatology and Maxillary Orthopedics, Periodontics and Endodontics;the Specialization in Aesthetic Dental Operative Surgery and the Master's Degree in Research."The Faculty has always contributed to the production of new knowledge, seeking that dentistry becomes a discipline through which its graduates work for the benefit of the community and research," concludes Professor Marín.Website contact: Carrera 45 # 26-85 Edif.
